Maureen is an extremely talented creative and even more importantly a wonderful human being. She was instrumental in providing creative and product direction at Article, I have zero hesitation in recommending her to you. If she can’t do the job, she’ll tell you. Maureen has both an appreciation for design excellence and at the same time a practical knowledge as to how a design can be translated into feasible reality. This rare combination of the practical and the creative have resulted in many of the successful designs that she has nurtured, from initial conceptual sketch into successful production. Maureen operates with a gentle yet persuasive manner in dealings with both the designer’s studio and the producer’s workshop where she is equally respected in these two very different environments.
I’ve had the privilege to work with many creative and art directors from many advertising agencies in Europe and North America for over 30 years. Maureen and I have travelled around the world to shoot projects and I’ve found her to be the most talented creative mind that I’ve had the chance to work with. She is a very committed, a passionate decision maker and a true leader with every team she works with.
I spent 4 years working alongside Maureen and as I grew under her leadership, she gave me incredible freedom and support to spread my wings as a designer / artist. We collaborated together on many projects seeing success and synergy. Maureen gave me insight to understanding the market which eventually lead to starting my own brand, Barter Design. She would truly be a value to any idea; be it a small startup or a large corporation.
One wonders about the definition of a designer and, in my words, I define a designer as a translator between object and user, between dreams and reality, between function and beauty. Not many designers are gifted with this ability in its totality, but Maureen can create products of functional beauty within everyone’s reach. For me this is not just design, but art.
After 2 years in business, our website needed updating and some creative direction. When I turned to Maureen for help, she knew which questions to ask about what I wanted my company vision to represent. She was quickly able to present me with a vision board of colours, photos and fonts to create the next phase of our company. Her vision, creativity and knowledge of the design industry is exactly what our website needed and she was quickly able to implement the job in collaboration with our graphic designer and the web developer.
As a gifted visual storyteller, Maureen is able to direct a photoshoot and mentally paint a picture for the team. She is able to envision products in unexpected places and that translates into some beautiful images. She is professional, inspirational, fun and she speaks in a creative language I understand. Maureen encourages me to bring my own mark to a project and that allows me to do my best work.
Maureen and I worked on a number of campaign photo shoots together during our time at Article. I have often been inspired by her ease in blending raw natural elements with refined furniture silhouettes. Our shoot in Tofino was a particularly magical one. Maureen’s art direction managed to evoke the warm spirit of the community, the vast beauty of the ocean and an elevated interior design aesthetic.
