Saturna Island Marine Research & Education Society | SIMRES is a volunteer community organization established to bring awareness to the marine environment of the Salish Sea. One of the goals of the organization is to attract marine researchers to the island for their projects and eventually establish a permanent research centre.
The location is strategically important because Saturna Island is in the middle of the Salish Sea, on the border between the US San Juan Islands and the Canadian Southern Gulf Islands and is adjacent to one of the highest marine traffic routes in North America.
It is also one of the best places to see whales and is traditional foraging area for the endangered Southern Resident killer whales. It’s an area with a high risk of anthropogenic (human-caused) disruption and the aim is to mitigate that through scientific research, education and community engagement.
It’s also an extremely beautiful place.
When SIMRES needed a new website, we reimagined the purpose and focused on authentic local photography to show the extraordinary beauty of this place, both above and below the sea. Striking photos, black and white blocks and simplicity of design were employed to keep the message clear and direct. These building blocks have been designed to translate easily to website, social media and print materials.

To keep alignment across all visual platforms, we created a visual guide or brand book to share amongst everyone who is involved in the organization. It’s a work in process, as we define the social media approach and various other touch points.
