Seal Pups

Personal

My home is close to a harbour seal birthing beach and I have the privilege of observing the seal pups for the first months of their lives. The newborns sleep and suckle on shore and have a cry that sounds remarkably like a human baby. The pups play in the kelp, are amused by sticks and learn survival skills from mom. Some of the moms come back every year to birth in the same place and they have become familiar faces in our marine neighbourhood. These are some of my favourite characters.

All these images were taken with a telephoto lens and all efforts taken to ensure no human interference.
