The inspiration for this collection began on the thin edge of the ocean’s shoreline known as the intertidal zone. It’s where life straddles air and water, where vibrant plant life grows amongst the sand and salt-encrusted rocks, sometimes fully exposed in the the sun, at other times completely submerged in water. I’m intrigued by this fragile ecosystem that supports a wide variety of life under extreme surf and weather conditions. It’s a place where surfaces erode and become misshapen and this was where I took cues for our product collection and design direction.

18Karat was a home furnishings company based in Vancouver BC. Our product design was inspired by objects and places found in nature. We brought the organic and eroded surfaces into the kitchen, in our organic textured dinnerware glazes and raw linen kitchen textiles. We worked almost exclusively with natural, indigenous and sustainable material—wood, earthenware, stone, flax, glass, branches and minerals.
